Sometimes it is nice to have something cool and quick in the morning. This is a filling and satisfying protein shake made only with whole food, NO protein powders!
Just say no to synthetic protein powders!
Let me share a
rantside note really quickly. We live in such a processed food focused nation that people tend to gravitate towards food products that are simulated to do what a whole food does naturally and in a superior way. Sometimes people buy and eat these products without even realizing what they are doing. It’s convenient after all. For instance, it is almost second nature to use a supplement like garlic instead of actually eating the real thing. Or, instead of eating a dense, whole food source of protein people tend to gravitate toward the scooper full of powder to get their protein allotment instead of actually eating the real thing. Protein powders are fully processed and often times full of sugar, MSG, aspartame, artificial colors, GMO’s dairy and grains to say the least. Sometimes synthetic protein powders even have high levels of heavy metals in them. For this girl who already has a hard time detoxing, I say no thank you to those synthetic, fake powders. I would rather have real, whole food protein! Let’s say, “Yes!” to whole food protein sources, okay.
With this lifestyle change, I have decided to ingest only those things that REDUCE inflammation rather than CAUSE it. Isolated Protein Powders can cause inflammation and Collagen Gelatin can actually promote healing of joints, intestines, and improve issues that come from aging – like wrinkles! Collagen Gelatin is actual bovine gelatin with the full amino acid profile that animal protein has. It is not derived or contrived, instead it comes from beef hides. It is the same kind of gelatin you can get from homemade bone broth, just dehydrated! No, it doesn’t taste like beef so don’t be worried!
There are two kinds of this nourishing Collagen Gelatin that I use:
Collagen Hydrolysate (green can) which is great for added protein in smoothies, shakes, soups, yogurts and anything that you don’t want to solidify into a jiggly jiggler.
Great Lakes Unflavored Beef Gelatin (red can) which is great for homemade jello, gummies, thickening pies or even making homemade marshmallows! This stuff solidifies.
I use two other whole food protein sources from plants in this breakfast – nuts and avocado. In moderation, nuts (for those who can tolerate them) are a great source of protein as well as other vitamins and minerals.
This breakfast can be a nourishing start to your day and provide you with satiating, good fats as well as protein to help you feel full longer. GAPS Friendly!
- ½ Avocado
- ¼ c. Nut Butter (we use almond but you can use any kind you prefer. By the way, peanut butter doesn't count - peanuts are legumes not nuts.) *Can sub sunbutter for a nut free variation.
- 1-1½ c. Milk (use only raw milk if tolerated, homemade nut milk, or coconut milk.)
- 2 Tlbs. Collagen Hydrolysate
- 1 Organic Banana
- 3 Tlbs. Raw Local Honey
- ½ c. ice
- Put all ingredients in a Vitamix and blend until smooth.
My boys consider this a treat breakfast! Generally, we start our day devoid of sugar but a couple of times a month I treat them to this hearty start! They love it and jump for joy when I tell them what I am making.
