Relieve Seasonal Discomfort with Essential Oils
It never fails, right around the time it starts to warm up after winter the pollens rise up in attack mode. Suffering begins with sneezing, congestion, a runny nose and even respiratory attacks that can be dangerous and scary.
The Struggle is Real
Our family used to struggle every allergy season with the annoyances of having tissue on hand all the time and scratchy throats and itchy eyes that wouldn’t quit. However, we have all gotten better and no longer need to take the over-the-counter stuff or bring that blasted box of tissues with us everywhere. It’s truly blissful!
Some Practical Ways we Found Relief from Seasonal Threats
1 | When we moved to a new state with new pollens and irritants floating in the air that our bodies had to get used to, the first thing we did was start using raw local honey every day. It helped to inoculate us with the local pollens and to acclimate our bodies to the new attackers our bodies were facing. Find a local apiary near you here.
2 | The next thing we did was drastically change our lifestyle and eating habits which repaired our guts, and in turn, helped our bodies handle the pollens that would come our way.
Did you know that when the intestinal barrier is permeable or “leaky” that is has a direct affect on how your body will handle allergens?
3 | The third thing we did was start using doTERRA Essential oils. Our choice to use oils has literally changed our life and health positively and we’ve never looked back. They truly are life-changing.
Using essential oils, we developed an essential oil trio that is always with us during high pollen seasons. Before I share that, I want to tell you a story of how this trio helped my youngest son during a very scary moment and how we saved our dollars from a trip to the ER.
Our Personal Victory Story Using Essential Oils for a Scary Time
My husband got tickets to go to the local rodeo. We had never gone before and we figured the boys would love to go. Try something new, right? It was an indoor rodeo and they had several huge fans blowing what looked like a mist of some sort all over the place. We think it was to keep the dust down.
We were there for about thirty minutes and all of a sudden Cody, my five-year-old at the time, started coughing a bunch. He’s been known to be a bit more sensitive to allergens but we thought it would pass soon enough and didn’t think much of it. We just took a mental note.
As time went on, the arena got louder and louder and we couldn’t really hear him too much anymore because his sounds were drowned out by the crowd. However, I was still looking over at him occasionally to see that he was having fun and doing OK.
Eventually, only a few minutes later, I noticed he didn’t look quite right so I called him over to me (he was sitting near is Daddy a few seats over). I put my ear to his mouth to hear him breathing. He had extremely labored breathing with severe respiratory distress and was now telling me he couldn’t breathe very well. Poor guy! Clearly, he was having an IgE response to the airborne irritants. He didn’t want to miss out but I could tell in his face he was very scared due to his lack of breath.
My husband and I both agreed it was time to go. We had probably been there a total of an hour. I know very well the telltale sign of a respiratory attack as I suffered severely with them all the way up into my late twenties. When we got outside the arena, as we were fast-walking to our car and Cody was now crying softly because he couldn’t catch his breath, we started applying Peppermint, Lavender and Lemon essential oils (the trio) as well as doTERRA Breathe Respiratory Essential Oil Blend to his chest and making him inhale the vapors from our hands.
We noticed that within a few minutes he wasn’t crying anymore and that he seemed a bit calmer. His labored breathing had not disappeared but it was calming down. It is for this reason I carry my sample bottles in a keychain everywhere with me. They are my emergency stash! I can’t tell you how many times they have gotten me out of a health scare. *You can get free sample bottles of our must-have emergency oils by joining our FeastingOnJoy Oils Family. At this point, we were racing home and, in the back of my mind, I was wondering what the outcome of this fiasco was going to be. I guess I was a bit skeptical because I knew what it took when I was a little girl to breathe again. Essential oils weren’t as readily available or known about back then. In my young years, I had many experiences of going to the hospital for treatments for this kind of distress. Those chemicals I took wreaked havoc on my system short term and long term and gave me terrible migraines. I knew the power of doTERRA Essential oils but this experience was truly putting them to the test for us.
We arrived home and immediately put him in a bathroom, sitting on the sink, with the shower running as hot as it could go. We were trying to get the room as steamy as possible. Once it was steamy enough, we drew a bath with warm water and added a drop of Peppermint, Lavender, Lemon and Breathe Respiratory Blend into the water. We placed him in the water and closed the shower curtain. With supervision, we made him sit in there for 20 minutes and within that period of time his bronchial tubes opened up and he was able to breathe normally again! His respiratory distress was relieved.
As a mom, being able to help him at home with something natural that actually worked was priceless!
doTERRA Essential Oils empower us as parents!
We literally would have had to run to those outside our home for help and spend hundreds of dollars and be in fear of what else we might contract while there. Instead, we could address the issue at home with safe, non-toxic doTERRA Essential Oils. I was SO thankful!
Learn Why This doTERRA Trio Works for Seasonal Threats
Lemon
- It is an airborne deodorizer.
- It helps to cleanse toxins from any part of the body.
- Lemon essential oil supports mucous clearing in nasal and sinus regions.
- It contains up to 90% Monoterpenes which are antihistaminic and soothe irritated tissues (most citrus oils have a high concentration of these.)
- Within the Monoterpenes are β-Pinenes which block NFκB from causing inflammation and are highly anti-bacterial. {NFκB signals certain cytokines to cause inflammation.}

- 1,8-Cineole also helps to reduce mucous secretion. (3)
- Melaleuca has great cleansing and purifying properties.
- Melaleuca has Terpinene-4-ol which has been found to suppress pro-inflammatory mediators activated by human monocytes – in other words – reduce inflammation. (4)
- Ravensara helps dilate, strengthen and open the respiratory system.

How we Used the Essential Oil Trio + doTERRA Breathe
This is how our family uses these oils to effectively relieve our hay fever and any respiratory reactions:
- Cupping Technique Apply one drop of each oil to palms of hands and rub around. Then cup your hands over your mouth and nose and breathe in deeply. Shut your eyes as peppermint oil will make them water if they’re open! The residual oil left on your hands can be applied directly to the soles of your feet or the back of your neck.
- For our children, we do cupping as above but let them takes some oil-free breaths in between breathing the essential oils as it can be quite potent in smell for their little noses.
- In addition to the cupping technique, we may also apply one drop of each oil to the bottom of the feet. If doing this on children you need to dilute the essential oils with fractionated coconut oil to help the three (or four with the Breathe Respiratory Blend) absorb into the skin slower. *Always start with dilution for topical application in children until you know what works for your child!
- We diffuse all of these oils in the house with multiple ultra-sonic diffusers like this one, in each person’s room at night if they have had a particularly bad reaction during the day.
- We also put these oils in our baths with Epsom salts (for adults and children) to benefit from the aromatic compounds as well as the oils that soak into the skin.
- Lastly, we have a car diffuser that we use in the car when pollen counts are high or someone is suffering that day.

For how long, or how many breaths do you take, when breathing in the essential oil in your hands?
Hi Trilby,
Great Question! I usually inhale about 5-6 times when I am breathing in an essential oil (or blend) from my hands. Hope that helps! Blessings, Jennifer
