All year round we enjoy apples in our family. Anything from green apples to the Fuji variety can be found in our fruit bowl and they’ve become one of our favorite go-to’s for healthy snacks. I also enjoy juicing the green apples since they have less sugar!
Since apples are front and center in our home, I decided to create a dessert that could satisfy my apple-loving family. The best parts about this recipe are that it is made only from whole food, it contains no refined sugar, no nuts, no dairy and is completely grain-free using a base of coconut flour.
Let’s Talk About the Whole Food Ingredients in This Paleo Apple Cake
- Organic Unsweetened Applesauce is the first ingredient you’ll need for this cake. You can make this version and leave the sweetener out. If you don’t want to make applesauce, then this is a tasty, inexpensive brand that’s unsweetened. Please only use organic apples as apples always appear on EWG’s dirty dozen list because they are coated with cancer-causing herbicides and pesticides.
- Raw Local Honey, We usually have a couple of gallons of this stocked in our pantry from our local apiary. You can find an apiary near you here. If you don’t have a local apiary, you can get this raw honey for the recipe.
- Organic Spices can be found here for an excellent price. Be sure to use organic spices so they don’t contain led and other dangerous contaminants.
- Coconut flour is such a staple in our home that I have to buy in large quantities. I have found the least expensive place to buy it where I can get the most is here.
- Cassava Flour also makes an appearance in this recipe and, though I use it sparingly, I like to have a good size bag of it on hand for various recipes. This is one of the best places to buy it.
- Coconut oil is also a staple in our home and we usually have a couple of gallons on hand to use. I don’t like the coconut oil that has an overpowering coconut oil taste and so I always buy this one which is glyphosate free too!
- doTERRA Essential Oils (which are the only brand ok to ingest) are an optional ingredient in this recipe but when you add the Cinnamon Bark, Clove and Ginger oil, the flavor just explodes in your mouth! You’ll definitely want to try it.
