A Hashimoto’s diagnosis does not have to equal a lifetime of misery
When your doctor first diagnoses you and says you need to take Synthroid (or any other form of thyroid hormone) and be on your way, PLEASE know that this medication will not resolve Hashimoto’s. In fact, it won’t address anything that has to do with your immune system attacking your thyroid gland (which is what Hashimoto’s is.) If you don’t even know what Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is then, before reading further, learn what it is here. After you read that article, come back here and finish this one!
Thyroid Medication and Hashimoto’s
Thyroid hormone medication, in some cases, can be very beneficial in the short term. It can help increase hormone levels in the blood which will help mitigate some of the symptoms of fatigue and body temperature fluctuations among other things. However, it is always good to approach this medicine with the mindset that you will try to get off of it. Not everyone is able to but, if at all possible, it’s a good idea to make that a goal as you work with your practitioner. *Again, please understand that taking thyroid hormone is NOT doing anything to address the root causes of WHY you have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
So Many Women Make This Mistake
Sadly, I come in contact with many women who chase symptom abatement without addressing the exact reasons why the thyroid is being attacked by the immune system. By doing this, it becomes an endless cycle of chasing the next symptom. It’s vitally important that you take the steps in addressing the foundations I talk about in this article to get to the root cause of WHY you have Hashimoto’s. Your result will be reducing or eliminating your symptoms as well as lowering or eliminating your antibodies and ideally putting your Hashimoto’s into remission!
Your Thyroid Gland is NOT the Problem
It’s important for you to understand that your thyroid gland is not the root cause of your diagnosis.
If you’re fatigued, that’s not the root cause.
If you are losing hair, that’s not the root cause.
Those are symptoms or what I like to call consequences of foundational dysfunction.
As a practitioner, I know that dealing only with symptoms is not the path for true, deep healing. Conversely, addressing the root causes of the symptoms is imperative for long-term wellness.
Yes, with a Hashi’s diagnosis, your thyroid is malfunctioning. The thyroid isn’t doing its job optimally because it has interference.
This crucial gland is interconnected to many, many systems of the body including but not limited to:
- the digestive system,
- the reproductive system,
- the cardiovascular system
- the entire endocrine system
When dealing with the root causes and fixing them, the damage to the thyroid gland from the immune system can stop or slow down. There are three specific foundations to address in order for lowered or no antibodies and to decrease or eliminate symptoms.
3 Foundational Steps to Address for Recovered Thyroid Health
1 | Mindset – emotional healing
First, you have to believe you can heal. It’s important to understand and believe that God did truly design your body to heal itself when burdens and interference are removed. In saying this, I don’t mean that you’re trying to trick your brain and tell it a story that in your heart of hearts you really don’t think will happen. Instead, I really mean you have to hold on to hope that your body will absolutely be able to do what God designed it to do when interference is removed – and that’s heal itself.
You provide the support and love and take the burden off the body and it can replenish and rejuvenate itself.
With the power of mindset, you’ve got to get connected to WHY you want to heal. What’s your purpose? What is that longing deep down that drives you and you can hold on to during those tough days. What kind of “you” do you envision when you lived a healed life?
“The Spirit is the highest part of our being that helps us connect and communicate with God; our soul includes our mind, will and emotions. Our body is the “container” for our spirit and soul and operates under the influence of the latter two. God desires not only for our body to be healthy, but our soul and spirit, as well, because we heal… when our entire person is made whole.” Dr. Tony Jimenez (Hope4Cancer pg 28)
Second, you need to initiate habits that create a lifestyle. However, those can only be implemented successfully when you are living in the right headspace.
Lastly, creating a spiritual hygiene routine is just as important as a sleep hygiene routine! This part of hygiene is fundamental for your soul and emotional wellbeing. It nourishes you from a cellular level for healing and wellness!
Negative emotions actually cause inflammation and, with healing Hashimoto’s, those negative emotions must practically and effectively be dealt with for deep, root cause sustainable wellness.
Most women poo poo mindset or put it off until last because it is the hardest area, but truly, if you deal with the mindset in tandem with the second and third foundations you will be well a lot faster.
2 | Nutritional Healing – (The 6 Pillars of Nutrition) Digestion, PPND food, Minerals, Fat, Hydration and Blood Sugar Balance
The second area to tackle when dealing with a Hashimoto’s diagnosis is the 6 pillars of nutrition. Food truly is medicine as Hippocrates told us. High quality, properly prepared, nutrient-dense (PPND) whole food, is what gives your cells the fuel it needs to function optimally, repair itself and detoxify every single day. It’s not about a diet or following some strict set of rules for a set number of months or years. It’s connecting what you eat to the wellness of YOUR body. What you eat, how you eat and when you eat can reduce inflammation and decrease and even eliminate the antibody attack from your immune system.
There are 6 pillars of nutrition that are critical to reverse Hashimoto’s symptoms.
They are:
- Optimal Digestion (and it’s not just about the toilet) – you are what you digest!
- Utilizing PPND food to nourish your cells, tissues, glands and organs – food either causes inflammation or quells it.
- Getting adequate macro and micro minerals daily (and digesting them) – for example, you need zinc to make TSH and iron to make TPO. You also need selenium for thyroid hormone conversion
- Choosing high-quality fats which conjugate into essentials fatty acids that every cell membrane, your immune system and your brain need desperately.
- Hydrating your body each day so cells can transport nutrients and hormones and proper nerve function can happen.
- Balancing your blood sugar. This is often dysregulated in Hashimoto’s cases and most women do not know the first thing about how to fix it. Blood sugar balance isn’t just for those with diabetes.
3 | Designing a Non-Toxic Flourishing Lifestyle
The third foundation to address for resolving Hashimoto’s symptoms and getting your high-quality life back is all about lifestyle.
This includes:
- Proper stress management – stress depletes important minerals like magnesium which is essential for the conversion of T4 to T3.
- Adequate, high-quality sleep – you will have a toxic body if you don’t sleep well or enough.
- Mitigating toxins in all areas of your life. Those can come from the environment, your kitchen, toiletries, cosmetics, home cleaners, EMF’s and even medications. Did you know fluoride inhibits iodine which the thyroid needs? Teflon in pans disrupts the endocrine system. Certain make-up contains heavy metals which disrupt thyroid hormone function and damage the liver. Fragrance causes hormonal imbalances! Toxins are horrible for thyroid health.
- Dealing with silent infections like mold and mycotoxicity, Epstein Barr virus, parasites and dysbiosis or yeast overgrowth as well as oral health infections.
You can’t out diet or supplement a healthy lifestyle.
What’s Your Next Step to Resolve Your Hashimoto’s Symptoms?
To heal, I did every one of these steps and still have to go back and revisit some of them from time to time if a flare happens. However, I can tell you that beyond a shadow of a doubt it is extremely beneficial to address all these root causes because your life and health will change positively forever.
Now I know these foundations cover A LOT. However, I want to encourage you. When each of these foundations is addressed correctly in bite-size chunks, one by one, over time, the positive progress stacks up and creates healing. Little by little becomes a lot!
