Conservative estimates share that over 54 million people suffer from joint discomfort including over 300,000 children! Sadly, diagnosed joint problems are actually the number one cause of disability today.
Joint Discomfort Root Cause
The root cause of joints that are ailing is inflammation and, in this day and age, inflammation can come from a myriad of places:
- Overworked and overstressed lives
- Diets high in refined carbohydrates and sugar
- Contaminants and chemicals in the air, on and in our food, in our water and even on our clothes and furniture
- Lack of sleep
- Medication usage
As I always share with my clients, using grade one essential oils are quite powerful in regards to their health benefits and should be used. However, they should not be treated as a band-aid. Instead, the root cause should be addressed by evaluating how to conquer the root cause of the inflammation. THEN or in tandem, use essential oils for added support. For starters, you can overhaul your pantry, learn to manage your stress well, overhaul your sleep and reduce the toxins in your life.
The Benefits of Using Grade 1 Essential Oils for Joint Health
Using essential oils can provide protection for the 206 bones in your body as well as help to relieve joint dysfunction that can come from deterioration and inflammation.
Check out Some of the Science on Essential Oils and Joint Support
1 | A study published in the Journal of Anesthesia showed that peppermint oil, when applied topically, has pain relief benefits that are associated with nerve pain and muscle pain. The study found that peppermint and eucalyptus oils are helpful due to their cooling and pain relieving effects. They were found to cool irritation in the joints and decrease pain levels. (1)
2 | Ginger essential oil has remarkably been found to reduce the number of prostaglandins in the body and those are compounds associated with pain. (2) Ginger oil also possesses antioxidant properties with help to significantly reduce inflammation and reduce pain. (3)
Rules of Essential Oil Application
When using essential oils aromatically, topically or internally, these are the rules to follow:
- Only use essential oils that are grade 1 and say they’re safe for internal use. {this will ensure there are no contaminants, adulteration or heavy metals.} Whenever I refer to taking essential oils internally, I am only referring to ONE brand that, in my 6 years of researched, I have deemed safe. Not all oils are created equal.
- Spot test first. If you have not used a certain oil before, try a drop on an inconspicuous place like your neck or feet and dilute it with 3 drops coconut oil. See how your body reacts to the oil.
- Dilute first. While there are some essential oils that don’t require dilution, it’s a good rule of thumb to always dilute the first time you use an essential oil and always dilute the oils with high phenol content {the hot oils like clove, lemongrass, cinnamon, etc}.
- The best application methods for using essential oils for joint discomfort is topical and internal rather than aromatically. However, using oils aromatically can help calm the body and help it get into the parasympathetic state.
- It’s ok to mix and match essential oils for your preference. For example, you can combine peppermint and eucalyptus for a synergistic anti-inflammatory effect.
