Doing a coffee enema is a powerful tool you’ll want to use if you have skin problems like eczema, brain fog, depression, fatigue, hemorrhoids, hormonal dysfunction, thyroid problems like Hashimoto’s, parasites, yeast or gut dysbiosis, joint issues like rheumatoid arthritis or even fibromyalgia.
Disclaimer: Although coffee enemas are an excellent tool to utilize in your healing journey, it’s important that you always consult your doctor and are working with a practitioner to guide you through the process and assure you that it is a safe protocol for your bio-individuality. Always work with a practitioner!
The Truth About Coffee Enemas
First of all, I have to let you know that I can’t stand the word enema! Whoever chose that word needs to be talked with. I still actually find myself avoiding saying the word out loud even though this is a protocol that I have used for years to help with Hashimoto’s.
I know enemas, in general, aren’t exactly a popular trend and putting coffee up there (ahem..) certainly isn’t something people are waiting in line to try. Also, I know there are a lot of emotions that circle around the idea of doing any type of enema, let alone a coffee enema.
When one of my practitioners first mentioned doing a coffee enema, here are some of those emotions that I was feeling:
- Uncertainty
- Confusion – coffee where?
- Sounds Risky
- Scared
- Skeptical
And I had a myriad of questions that I needed to be answered before I would even begin to entertain the thought of doing a coffee enema.
Honestly, after educating myself, getting adequate guidance and actually doing coffee enemas, I cannot sing the praises of them enough!
The symptom improvement that coffee enemas have brought me is profound. My burning skin and eczema have drastically improved, gallbladder pain has gone away, horrible PMS symptoms have subsided, depression has disappeared and so much more.
The Extensive History of Coffee Enemas
The protocol of doing an enema is not new. This procedure has been documented as early as 1550 BC by the Egyptians. In particular, coffee enemas have been around since the early 1900s and have been used in World War II to help with pain management, nausea, and anxiety. Additionally, they have been used as a core healing protocol by German physician Max Gerson who treated hundreds of terminal patients. (1) (2)
Coffee enemas were actually listed in the 9th edition of the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy {Rahway, NJ: Merck & Co, Inc; 1956:1747-1748} until 1972 as a standard treatment for health and healing. According to Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez (an editor of the Manual), the coffee enema protocol was removed from the Merck Manual due to lack of space. (3)
Enemas have long been used for helping detoxify, relieve constipation, relieve poisoning and coffee enemas specifically have been a protocol used in cancer treatment to help detoxify the body. (4)
The Function and Purpose of a Coffee Enema
Let’s put it this way, if you don’t love your organs, give them the nutrients they need to function and relieve any undue burden put on them, sickness and disease will happen.
Coffee enemas (a choloretic process that stimulates bile) are one way to reduce the toxic burden on the liver, cleanse the bile and alter the microbiome in the large intestine. Love your liver, right!?!
If you’re ready to get geeky with me, I’d like to guide you through some of the physiological processes that take place in the body when doing a coffee enema.
When organic coffee is introduced into the colon, some of the constituents are absorbed into the hemorrhoidal vein and, due to vascular dilation, are lead directly to the hepatic vein which leads directly to the liver.
There are two processes that occur at this point:
1 | The caffeine and palmitic acids in the coffee cause the liver to release bile into the system. This release triggers the gallbladder to give more bile to the liver while the old bile that was in the liver (or even stored in the gallbladder) is cleansed out of the body. (5) Since bile is generally recycled in the body, the process of a coffee enema allows the old bile that might be storing toxins to be excreted and new, clean bile to be created and used for fat digestion.
2 | Due to the reaction in the liver from the caffeine and palmitic acids in the coffee, the master antioxidant Glutathione also increases in the body’s cells which results in the scavenging of free radicals and the gathering of rogue material to be excreted. (6) Dr. Gerson says that doing a coffee enema can actually boost glutathione-S-transferase 600-700%!
Fun Fact! In the process of doing a coffee enema, the body’s blood will circulate through the liver 4-5 times!
The Health Benefits of Doing a Coffee Enema
While you may be doing several different types of protocols at a time like diet changes, utilizing essential oils, devoting time to stress management, and even overhauling your sleep, doing a coffee enema is wonderfully beneficial to add to your routine.

Drinking Coffee vs. Doing a Coffee Enema
I get these questions a lot – “Why can’t I just drink a cup of coffee? Won’t it have the same effect?”
When you drink a cup of coffee it goes through the entire digestive process starting in the mouth, into the stomach and then goes through all nineteen feet of the small intestine. During the journey, the coffee is broken down into various molecules, nutrients are extracted and the rest is excreted.
Conversely, when doing a coffee enema, the liquid is not broken down like it is during digestion since it is entering the body through the rectum and ultimately into the hepatic or portal vein ultimately landing in the liver. The mechanical process that occurs is not the same when you drink coffee compared to doing a coffee enema.
Type of Coffee to Use for a Coffee Enema & Brewing Technique
The type of coffee you use for the enema is very important. Equally important is the type of water used and the technique used to brew the coffee.
So let’s talk about that.
First, you’ll want to ONLY use organic coffee. Non-organic coffee is chock full of herbicides, pesticides, mold and other mycotoxins and you don’t want that entering your body. (Honestly, you don’t want that entering your mouth either!)
Second, you’ll want to get lightly air roasted coffee because it has the highest levels of palmitic acid. (8)
Third, you’ll want to use distilled water in your coffee enema, not tap water.
Fourth, you’ll want to make sure you DO NOT run your coffee through a paper or cloth filter. Doing so will deplete the kahweol and cafestol which are two diterpene palmitates {and lipids/oils} in the coffee which help with detoxification. (9) (10)

I have one large gallstone, the effects won’t open the bile duct enough to release the stone would it! I produce bile just fine I just have that large accumulated stone that I’m worried will get stuck.
I am not sure if this is a question or a comment. However, if it is a question, I am not able to give personal medical advice. Please consult your physician if you have a question.
How often should I do the coffee enema?
Hi Jennifer, I cannot give that advice since you are not my client and I don’t know anything about your health history. Definitely, something to go over with your personal practitioner.
Started doing enemas to cure my eczema, which popped all over my body 4 months ago. After getting my 1st spot on my belly, from what I believe is a nickel allergy from buttons,it started spreading so fast that it covered half of my body.I also have celiac and hashimoto’s,so I believe there is some connection here.I removed all animal products from my diet, even though it was organic, grass fed meats and wild caught fish (I didn’t eat dairy, nor eggs) due to sensitivity) and started juicing and eating roasted vegetables, without any grains, which I hate anyway.Lost a lot of weight (5’7″ and 110 lbs – the weight I had before my kids) and to see that eczema has only been getting worse, with uncontrollable itching and liquid coming out after scratching.I then added coffee enemas to the mix (i use SA Wilson coffee) and celery juicing. It has been close to a week and all I can say is that my skin is raw meat.I am lost and don’t know if I should continue or not.
My nickel, aluminum ,latex ,animal hair and feathers (and God knows what else) allergies are taking over my body.It is impossible to stay away from such things and not sure if I should as it could make my body more prone to other allergies in the future.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Hi Ann,
Enemas won’t “cure” eczema. They aid the detox systems of the body to excrete cellular waste. I don’t know you’re health history and you’re not my client so I cannot advise you personally but I will share a few notes. Cutting out animal products for any humans will create nutritional deficiencies which directly impair detox. To be healthy, humans need to eat high-quality animal products along with organic vegetables and fruits. I personally do not recommend just celery juice when juicing. An immensely nutrient-dense whole food diet as well as a gut-healing regimen is super important BEFORE doing any detoxification protocols like coffee enemas. Additionally, detoxification pathways need to be open in order for toxins released during the coffee enema (or any other detox/killing protocol not to get recirculated in the body causing further and worsening symptoms. If I were in your position, I personally would work on healing my gut, cleaning up toxins in my life from toiletries, cosmetics, etc, then after that, dive into detox protocols like coffee enemas and use binders appropriately to help bind to toxic substances that are released. I would also get tested for heavy metal toxicity and parasites. If those tests came back positive, I would utilize heavy metal clearing and parasite clearing protocols. Hope that helps!
The link for a kit is no longer valid. Is there a new link to a kit? Thank you!

I’m so grateful for all this helpful information. I’m curious if using a glass French press that has a fine mesh strainer as part of the “plunger” would work. Has anyone tried this?
Hi Cindy,
You could try it and see how much it strains. Just make sure there aren’t any visible bigger particles in the coffee. If you try it, come back and let us know how it worked for you! Blessings, Jennifer
