If you’ve been in the autoimmune arena for any length of time, you’ve most likely heard about the importance of seeing a functional doctor or naturopath rather than an allopathic MD.
While I don’t disagree with these ideas, I still find that there is a huge gap in helping the patient truly regain wellness long term.
Instead, what I have experienced in the past and have heard so many others describe is that they get set up with a functional doctor or naturopath, spend loads of time, money, and emotion with that doctor, amass A LOT of new supplements, and what seems to be a never-ending cycle of follow-ups that cost an arm and a leg. The results – they either make no progress, or don’t get very far ahead in healing from when they started with that doctor, and/or they run out of money.
Has that happened to you? If so, reply to this email and let me know!
Since the onset of the diagnosis of Hashimoto’s for me in 2007, I have seen 25 doctors of all types: MDs, Endocrinologists, Naturopaths, Functional Doctors, Chiropractors, Primary Care Physicians, and more.
What They Didn’t Teach Me, I Had to Teach Myself
Not one of them (with a slight exception of my current partner in health), taught me HOW and WHY the body works, and that Mindset, Using Food as Medicine and Lifestyle are literally the basis for your body being able to heal.
So, what do I mean by that?
The First Thing They Didn’t Teach Me
In my opinion, a good doctor will not only share with you what to do to help your body heal and find balance again, but they will also tell you why what they are telling you to do, is something that you should do.
Usually, educating the patient is sorely lacking.
One time long ago, I had a doctor tell me not to eat sugar and to eat gluten-free.
Uh, ok. But WHY?
Why is that going to help my body?
What is sugar doing to my body that would be helped if I didn’t eat it?
Similarly, what is gluten doing to my body that would be helped if I didn’t eat it?
Now, I know not everyone desires these levels of knowledge but, those who are successful in remitting their autoimmune condition, are the ones who understand the illness and WHY doing certain things helps the body heal. The understanding of WHY is empowering and helps you to become your own advocate well as stick with changes that need to be made.
Doctors should educate you so that you won’t be a lifelong patient on the hamster wheel of follow-ups, new supplements, tests, follow-ups, new supplements, etc….
At Feasting On Joy, this is why our tagline is “Educate, Apply, Heal, Thrive.” You have to be educated to heal! It’s my passion to educate my readers, clients, and members so they can apply what they learn and then heal and thrive in life!
The Second Thing They Didn’t Teach Me
The second part of the missing piece to the puzzle in regard to doctors becoming true healers is that no one will actually heal their body if they are not taught to address these three areas: their mindset, using food as medicine daily, and detoxifying their lifestyle.
These days, doctors spread themselves so thin taking on so many new patients that they never have enough time to be able to dig into these super important areas and details of a patient’s health. Furthermore, MDs only get 4-10 hours of training in this area anyway! Even Functional Doctors I see outsource nutrition or mindset and don’t even offer modalities of detox and lifestyle changes to their patients except through supplements.
In my opinion, the medical model that Functional Doctors, Naturopaths, etc. are taking parallels the allopathic medical model. The only difference is that instead of prescribing medications, these doctors are mostly prescribing supplements.
I see a problem with that.
Until patients are taught in depth about how the body works and WHY certain modalities are necessary to heal, they won’t heal. They also need to be given tools to deal with their mindset blocks that hinder healing, overhaul their food choices, and actual daily lifestyle practices for wellness and restore balance in the body, patients will continue to be lifelong customers lining the pockets of their doctors. And most importantly, they won’t get well.
However, There’s Good News!
The good news is that in the past few years as more people are starting to understand holistic healing and spending more time educating themselves, they are requiring more from their doctors. The result of that is that I have started to see a slight shift in that there are now doctors, practitioners, and the like that DO understand these principles and are working with their clients/patients to heal and rebalance from the ground up. For that, I am truly thankful! The hard and sad part is that now it is often not affordable long term.
In my opinion, in 10 years we will have more and more opportunities to find true healing doctors that actually want to have healthy patients and understand the ways God designed the body to heal. I also hope that more will want to keep costs affordable.
I hope and pray for you that it doesn’t take 25 doctors and going back to school to become your own practitioner as it did for me to get your body back into balance!
What You Can Do Now
If you are in a place I’ve described where you are on that hamster wheel and feeling like you aren’t getting anywhere in healing, I would like to invite you to an opportunity that will give you the health results you’re looking for affordably.
Not only does this opportunity include a tight-knit community of praying, Godly, women, but it comes with the education you need to reform your mindset about yourself and your body as well as completely understand how your body works and what it needs. Plus, this opportunity guides you to premium gut health by learning exactly what it means to use food as medicine using the 6 pillars of nutrition for real healing in your body, so your symptoms disappear from the root causes! Lastly and certainly not least, you will learn how to reconstruct the habits in your lifestyle to be able to manage stress better, sleep deeply, move daily, detox your cells and root out silent/stealth infections that are almost always a trigger for chronic illness.
It’s called Wellspring™ and I put this opportunity and program together to fill in the gap that is so sorely lacking in the mainstream medical arena today.
